Noujaim Named Honorary Chair for Relay
for Life
Waterbury Legislator Helps Raise Cancer Research Funds
WATERBURY- State Representative Selim Noujaim
(R-Waterbury) has been named Honorary Chairman for the Relay for Life, a
24-hour long walkathon that raises money and awareness for cancer research
under the auspices of the American Cancer Society.
The Relay for Life began 10 years ago in Connecticut, raising funds
through pledges to teams that have at least one member walking on a
designated track for a 24-hour period. The relay has grown over the years,
with eighty teams participating last year, raising over $250,000. Relay
sponsors hope to have over 100 teams participate in the event this year.
“We are proud and excited to have Selim Noujaim serving as Honorary
Chair of this event,” said Emma Barone, who is Co-Chairman of the event.
“His great energy and enthusiasm in everything he does will certainly be
an enormous asset to our cause.”
“I am humbled to have been selected for the Honorary Chair of the
event,” said Rep. Noujaim, who has been active with the Relay for life
for the past seven years. “Every year this great event grows larger and
larger, raising more money and giving greater hope to cancer patients in
the effort to find a cure.”
The Relay for Life will take place at the Municipal Stadium in
Waterbury on June 11th and 12th, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Representative Noujaim will be the Master of Ceremonies at the Opening
Ceremony, which will be followed by the Survivor’s Lap held in honor of
cancer survivors. Music and entertainment will also be on hand during the
day, with clowns, pony rides and magicians as well as a Kids’ Walk for
children to do a lap around the track. There will also be a luminary
ceremony with candle-lit bags in honor of cancer survivors, and those who
have succumbed to cancer.
The Relay for Life is sponsored at the “Excalibur Level” of over
$10,000 by the Harold Lever cancer Center of Waterbury, the Waterbury
Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital. Numerous other local sponsors have
contributed this year toward making this event a success.
