Grant will
Fund Repair and Replacement of Sanitary Sewer Pipes at WARC’s East Main Street
Facility
The State Bond Commission has
approved a $30,826 grant for the repair and replacement of sanitary sewer pipes
at the Waterbury Association for Retarded Citizens (WARC) facility at 1929 East Main Street at its meeting Friday, state Representative Selim G. Noujaim announced
today.
The Bond Commission approved the
funding at its regular monthly meeting Friday at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
“This grant will enable WARC to
undertake major repairs to sewer pipes that run from its East Main Street
facility to the municipal line in the middle of the street,” said
Representative Noujaim, R-Waterbury. “The work this grant will pay for is
critical to the continued health and safety of WARC’s staff and clients as well
as the preschool students who attend classes at the facility. I’d like to thank
Governor Rell and the Bond Commission for approving this funding.”
“Our building’s sewer pipes have
deteriorated to the point that we were constantly calling in technicians to
perform emergency repairs to keep them functioning,” said WARC Director Deborah
Vitarelli. “Our request for the grant has been pending for some time now, so I
was overjoyed to hear that it is up for approval by the Bond Commission this
Friday. The timing is perfect because spring is upon us. That means the work
can get underway during good weather and, after the new pipes are installed,
the road can be patched up without causing major traffic problems or
inconveniencing people entering and exiting the building.”
One of the sewer pipes is
partially collapsed and the other has several cracks. If the sewer pipes had
continued to deteriorate and become unusable, sewage could have backed up into
the basement, forcing the facility to close, Ms. Vitarelli said.
