Improvements
Expected to Help SKYE Cable Reduce Energy Use, Lower Electricity Bills
SKYE Cable XIII, the Waterbury
studio where most local cable access programs are produced, will improve the
visual quality of its programming; reduce its energy consumption by about half;
and lower its electricity bills because of improvements financed by funding
state Representative Selim G. Noujaim helped obtain for a project to upgrade
its lighting system and camera equipment.
The lighting system improvements
cost $4,900, half of which came from the state’s Energy Conservation Fund,
which is administered by Connecticut Light & Power, and half from a
donation from Alliance Energy Solutions of Oxford, which installed the new
fixtures. CL&P contributed another $3,000, which paid for new camera
equipment for the studio, said Representative Noujaim, R-Waterbury.
“Representative Noujaim brought
SKYE Cable’s problems with its lighting system to our attention when Robert
Drain, our Western Division director appeared on his program last year,” said
CL&P Spokesman Mitch Gross. “He got the ball rolling and we were able to
get the grant approved. Energy costs are a major issue and we were glad to help
SKYE Cable conserve electricity and reduce their energy costs.”
“It was a Godsend for us when
Selim helped us obtain the funding to help upgrade our lighting system,” said
SKYE Cable President Stephen Mindera. “Our original lighting system was
antiquated. The bulbs burned out quickly, threw out a lot of heat and burned
too much electricity. The new lighting is cost effective and generates less
heat. It will benefit every cable access user who utilizes our studio. Selim
does a lot of things like this for the community. We really appreciate him
going out of his way for us. “
“Originally, there were a dozen
high intensity discharge fixtures at SKYE that burned excessive amounts of
electricity,” said Alliance Energy Solutions Energy Consultant Greg Hudson. “By
replacing those fixtures with energy conservation units, we will cut their
energy use in half and improve the lighting quality in the studio. The new
equipment has a longer life cycle and doesn’t require as much maintenance,
which will significantly reduce their maintenance costs.”
Alliance Energy Solutions is an
energy services firm that identifies energy savings opportunities for business
and government facilities, private and public schools, hospitals, and
non-profit institutions throughout the state and elsewhere in the country, Mr.
Hudson said.
