Funding
to Help Pay for Resurfacing Parking Lot, Other Improvements
The State Office of Policy and Management has awarded
a $48,860 grant to the Mattatuck Senior Center that will help pay for the
resurfacing of the parking lot and other renovations to the facility, state
Representative Selim Noujaim, R-74th District, who worked to secure
the funding, announced today.
“The Mattatuck Senior Center is a place where friends
from throughout Waterbury meet to play table games, reminisce, and talk about
their children, grandchildren and other family members. I’m privileged to
support the senior center once again by helping to secure this grant. The
renovations and improvements it will help fund are important to the future of
the senior center and to the people it serves,” Representative Noujaim said.
“We’re very grateful to Representative Noujaim for his
efforts to improve our seniors’ quality of life through his advocacy on behalf
of the Mattatuck Senior Center. The grant we applied for will help pay for
improvements to the rest rooms to make them more accessible to the disabled.
The parking improvements will enable more people to participate in senior
center activities,” said John Sarlo, chairman of the center’s Board of
Directors and a former city alderman.
“I’d like to congratulate Selim on the hard work he
put in to obtain this grant and to thank him for his continued commitment to
the center and to Waterbury’s seniors,” said Monsignor James Coleman, pastor of
St. Peter and Paul and St. Leo parishes, the owners of the senior center
building. “This grant will enable the center to make needed improvements to the
building, making it a more attractive place for our seniors to gather and stay
engaged in the life of our community.”
“The center provides a wide range of recreational and
community services for Waterbury seniors,” said House Republican Leader
Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-142nd District. “This grant will help pay
for upgrades and repairs that will enable it to better serve the city’s
elderly. It is a worthwhile use of state funds and I was pleased to support the
center’s request.”
In addition to the parking lot resurfacing project,
the grant will help pay for handicapped renovations to the restrooms, for
stripping and sealing the center’s main floor and for repairs to the canopy
over the walkway.
