Potentially Contaminated
Barrels will be Removed from Site Thursday
State
Rep. Selim Noujaim, R-Waterbury, said workers will be removing 30 drums of
potentially hazardous material beginning Thursday morning from the Calabrese
portion of the Scovill Landfill Superfund site on Store Avenue.
Rep.
Noujaim said, “This is a very important project. Contaminated drums have been
on the site on Store Avenue for many years. Contractors for the federal
Environmental Protection Agency will be removing these barrels throughout the
day on Thursday.”
Rep.
Noujaim said he wanted to be sure that neighbors are aware of the activity and are
informed about the purpose. He has been instrumental in working with EPA since
last year in having the barrels removed.
As
part of the EPA’s investigation of the site, it was determined that the drums
have stored waste water, some soil cleaned from a drilling rig during soil
sampling as well as disposable gloves and overalls.
During
the Thursday activity, Rep. Noujaim said, workers may be wearing protective
clothing and respirators solely as a precaution against inhaling dust
particulates. Throughout the day, EPA contractors will be loading drums onto a
truck and hauling them to a licensed facility in Stoughton, MA.
Rep.
Noujaim said the EPA expects to continue site investigation work this coming
summer and will hold a public meeting to discuss investigation results. Rep.
Noujaim has been working with former Waterbury Alderman Dennis Odle on making
sure the drums are removed.
Rep.
Noujaim serves Waterbury’s 74th Assembly District in the state House of
Representatives.
